Awful quiet in this thread. I have heard there is something bubbling in the background, so do not NELSAP Saddleback yet. I am not saying more, but was in Portland at a RE closing last month and heard interesting scuttlebutt. Reminder, it was SCUTTLEBUTT!

Scuttlebutt = Rumor? or not?

Besides, other ski areas have been NELSAPed and returned from the dead.

Not many and none so far afield from population centers.

Never did make it over to Majella's "Portland HQ" to ask how things were going and after news reports surfaced decided not to make the visit.

I think Majella was the best hope and that hope is obviously very dim. I have 0 faith in the Saddleback Mountain Foundation to raise the necessary funds and to run the mountain.

DON’T TELL THE WIVES’: REDS SPONSOR’S PLAN TO LURE
A PLAN to attract wealthy foreign investors with hostesses “so we don’t have to get the bloody brothel license” has been unearthed as pressure on a major Queensland Reds sponsor run by the brother-in-law of a former Queensland premier continues to mount.

Not going to register for the full article, but the story has taken another darker turn.

I got to read it once before the paywall went up....here's the part I copied - (now searching for the Boston location 8) )

The plan was to attract wealthy foreign investors by using exclusive clubs, which had the extra special privilege of beautiful women being available for guests.
“You never tell the wives this,” Seb Monsour told people working for his Brisbane-based fund manager-property outfit Majella Group. “We’re looking at hostesses – bring in outside (women) so we don’t have to get the bloody brothel license.”
Queensland Business Monthly can reveal Monsour, the firm’s chief executive officer, was discussing creating “private entertainment spaces” for foreigners who parked money with Majella.
They would be in exclusive clubs/offices from Brisbane to Boston. The one in Brisbane would be the site of Zuri nightclub in Fortitude Valley.
It was part of a planned offering for wealthy foreigners moving to nations such as Australia. Clients would be offered a broad range of services such as airport pick-ups or help finding schools, and it was all part of a grander plan.
Majella, which boasted offices in four countries including China, was proposing investments in everything from apartments to medical developments. Such investments needed money, and wealthy Chinese or Indians could be tapped because Australia touts special visas for moneyed migrants.
The fund manager would eventually attract millions of dollars and become sleeve sponsor for rugby’s Queensland Reds in a deal worth $1.1 million.

Half a month until what may or may not be a deadline for the Majella/Saddleback deal. If June 1st comes and goes with no news, I am assuming there is still some hope for the deal.

However, I am guessing that news of some kind will come out in the next few weeks.

If it falls through, would be great to see some events held at the mountain next winter. Whether it is food, drink and skinning with a low cover charge or getting one lift spinning for a higher cover charge, would be good to get people back on the mountain for a few weekends. Could be an impossible insurance nightmare if the Berry's aren't willing to host the events and are just renting/leasing/allowing easements for the use of the mountain.

If the Berry's want to make a small amount of money back while they wait for a buyer, allowing a community group to fundraise throughout the year and then operate the lodge, and a lift or two for a few weekends a year could be a fun, low risk option. Just like in school when you raise money for your school trip, then pay the difference, the mountain could operate as little or as much as fundraising efforts allowed each year.

There have to be low cost, low risk options that are better than just letting the mountain sit idle.

Not expecting any new news today. Probably in the Berry's best interest to let Majella quietly fade away.

Given the company did not have a purchase agreement not surprising they were turned down. At least there is more interest out there.

Looks like Mr. Monsour has other things on his plate now. Arrested for $5 million in fraud.
