A green idea!

Postby mattyboombatty » Sat Nov 11, 2006 1:32 pm

For my job i require multiple night hotel stays on occasion. This idea has stemmed from that and thinking about how much of a waste it is to have my room serviced for every night that i am in a certain location. I don't need an immaculate room to stay in nor do i need clean towels and sheets everyday. Not to mention the daily waste of chemicals that is unessacarily used in cleaning all surfaces every day.

So I just keep the "Do Not Disturb" sighn on my door for the whole duration of my stay at any hotel. If 50% of people did this this at every hotel/condo they stayed at, the environmental impact of such establishments would be greatly reduced. As an added bonus, if no one is in your room less chance of anything being stolen!

If you run out of anything either;

A. take it off a random houskeeping cart
B. Call and they will deliver it

I found that if they have the Green sign out, they pick up things anyway. Even if you save your towels and such for the few days you are there, they are still loading up the machines and dryers to do the everyday laundry. several rooms of not laundering really does not change the size of the load enough to make any difference at all.

I've found it to be pretty standard practice for towels and linens to be washed only by request (usually by leaving them in the bathtub, though it varies). They still get folded and put back every day, but they don't get washed.

Not only is it green, but it saves the hotel money as well, so most of them like using this system.

I get fed up with so called green initiatives when I carefully do NOT leave towels on the floor etc but they get changed anyway.

(No they weren't re-folded, definitely different towels - even when I put their pretty little card on top of the towels). I hadn't thought about the do not disturb, but that would also mean no tip for the maid which is a loss. I like the bed being made and general tidy-up but don't need fresh linen. They need a DO NOT CHANGE sign probably in Spanish that you can put on top of the towel rack.
